Consultant forensic psychiatrists work with mentally disordered offenders in secure hospitals, prisons and community forensic services. They are the first choice for homicide, serious violence and cases where a hospital order may be recommended.
Most are approved under section 12 of the Mental Health Act 1983, which matters for fitness to plead findings and hospital orders.
What they assess
- Fitness to plead
- Mental state at the time of the offence
- Diminished responsibility and insanity
- Hospital and restriction orders
- Risk of violence
Qualifications we check
GMC registration with specialist registration in forensic psychiatry, usually section 12 approved. We also confirm criminal report experience, court attendance and professional indemnity insurance.
